Thanks for the replies, everyone. I think I am going to get some Syntrax and ON and see if either of them (or both!) trip my trigger.

The less lactose the filtration process removed. The best whey protein powder will have somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 grams of carbs

Just curious why is it important to remove the carbs? I mean, I actually eat carbs along with my protein shake or add in a post workout carb supplement. Just curious?

I wouldn't expect a worthy answer. Stick with your carbs and protein mix.

I am officially on the protein supplement bandwagon, after my 5 pound tub of ON double chocolate arrived last week.

Nothing like a big ol' thick glass o' chocolate milk right after a workout and then shortly before bed. LOL

I just got True Protein - 5lbs of unflavored + the flavor powder for French Vanilla and Strawberries & Cream (Premium).

I do have issues with over sweet, so I probably use less than half of the 'recommended' amount of the flavor. With just water it is... not so good. With milk it is quite good. French Vanilla more so than the Strawberry. I tend to now do half & half milk/water when I make it and throw in some inulin ans psyllium husk. Sometimes some berries in the blender if I feel like it.

First reaction on the part of my hubby. Fix myself a glass of the French Vanilla w/milk. Have a few sips, then offer him a taste with more than half the glass left. Glass returned to me was empty.

I drank a glass of Muscle Milk after soccer practice every day for four years in HS. It definitely helped me get quick protein intake. It should never replace quality normal food intake, but immediately after a workout it is the best. I'm thinking you can get by with something simple and spend the rest of your money on meat, milk, eggs, and potatoes.

I just cracked open my 5 pound tub of Gaspari Myofusion (Milk Chocolate) last night. Blech! Holy cats that stuff is thick, at least when mixed with skim milk. I think I am going to try to cut it a little bit with some water and crushed ice to take some of the edge off.

Unless it really starts to grow on me quickly, I can't see grabbing another tub of this flavor. Between the thickness and the too-sweet flavor (to me), I won't be able to choke this stuff down fast enough.

You have just described why I find buying the flavor separate from the protein is the best thing evah! If the flavor sucks I can toss $5 worth of flavor instead of $40 of protein!

That makes a lot more sense to me now.

However, I did find a component to make the stuff taste a little better. Now I use about half cold water, half skim milk, then add a couple of ounces of Rum Cream to the concoction. I polished off my bottle of Cruzan Rum Cream this way, and I am guessing the bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream will also give it the boost I am looking for. But I won't know until I try, huh? Sure this doesn't quite align with my pseudo-diet goals, but I am taking a bullet in the name of science. Or something like that. HA!

Of course I make up two shakes at night (one to drink shortly before bed time, and the second for the morning), so I just need to make sure that the morning shake doesn't have the booze in it. I don't think my boss would appreciate that, although I would probably be in a slightly better mood. LOL

Dave

I haven't used it in years. Tried a few other brands and wound up switching. I change my mind about things quite often as new things come to light.

I hadn't seen your post before, but I just wanted to I can definitely see the rum cream making it taste much better! But I also think it would not be strictly speaking best to include right before work...

Default Re: Which protein powder?

I have been meaning to post on this issue for quite some time. In researching for the best protein powder, I get the answer as whey protein. Most commonly liked brands I found are ON, true protein, syntrax etc. The whey protein powder I use is by CEL. The only reason I bought this one was because it was the cheapest I could find. To my surprise it tastes great. Yesterday I checked for artificial sweetner content in it and I found that it contains sucralose (aka splenda). This is what I found about sucralose:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K3s8scj9Ww

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jn7EMipoDfY

This was ok. What was shocking to me was that each of these protein powders actually have trace amounts of heavy metals such as lead and mercury!! Link:

Customer Image Gallery for 100% Whey Protein - Gold Standard

I personally am scared to see this. Sure these are trace amounts but we take em everyday. I take about 50 grams of it every day and I'm sure that there are many that are taking more than that everyday. I want to hear what people on this forum think about this issue. In order to limit potential problems associated with protein powder, I use hemp protein 2/3 and whey protein 1/3. I'd take hemp protein alone for my protein needs but it runs expensive. Anybody know of a whey brand that is devoid of issues such as artificial sweetners and heavy metal toxins?

Personally, I don't sweat it. Here's a response from ON on theirs. News | Optimum Nutrition: True Strength

I buy from trueprotein.com which lets me get no sweetener and they're conscientious about heavy metal content etc. although I can't find a link.

Jeanette,
Thank you! I have grown to be a skeptic in the health field over last few years. I appreciate the link you sent and it helps me put things in perspective. My suspicion though, remains. Reason being that the above link is from the company itself. Of course they're going to say stuff that will make there products sell. I am going to research on my end to find out if the levels of heavy metals etc they mention for the things such as spinach and shrimp etc are true to begin with. Second, I want to know that the levels that they say in their products are true or not. If I can find other sources that confirm it, then I'll be totally convinced. But the link you provide is an excellent start for me. So thanks so much!
